Braces aren’t just for kids, more and more adults are turning to braces to get that perfect smile – we take a look at how braces have evolved over time.
Humans were always preoccupied with their teeth it seems – as early as 400BC Hippocrates wrote about issues and concerns with ‘irregularities of teeth’
The first evidence of braces were found on Egyptian mummies, where they used crude metal bands around their teeth. Remains have also been found with ‘cat gut’ running along the teeth, similar to the orthodontic wire of today.
Orthodontics is dentistry’s oldest specialty, dating back to the 1930’s – the first braces were made of gold! The metal braces today are made of stainless steel.
Braces for kids are pretty much a fashion statement these days – the metal braces used are much smaller and more efficient at straightening teeth, and the wires are thinner. The rubber bands used with braces now come in a range of colours that can be changed at each appointment.
There’s also a choice of clear (ceramic) braces and clear aligners these days. Most adults prefer these clear options to the metal braces. There are a range of brands, and different clinics will use different options. Just make sure you’re happy with the treatment option. We always refer patients if we think a better option is available elsewhere.

Whatever option you choose, it’s really important to look after your teeth properly during and after the procedure; so proper brushing, and no sticky, hard or chewy food – they can damage the braces and prolong the procedure.
And make sure you wear your post-brace retainer or you could undo all the great work.
