Teeth whitening Q & A

Whether it’s a Hollywood smile you’re after, or just a confidence booster, teeth whitening can do the trick. According to a recent Australian study, people who smile were judged as more likeable and approachable than non-smilers and non-authentic smilers – now that’s something to smile about!

But before you go running out to get that winning smile, we’ll give you the lowdown to help you make the right tooth whitening choice:

Q: How are teeth whitened?
A: A gel with a chemical ingredient whitens your teeth. The chemical is usually either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide.

Q: Who’s qualified to whiten your teeth?
A: Teeth whitening is a form of dentistry and should only be performed by a dentist or another regulated dental professional, such as a dental hygienist or dental therapist. Some beauty salons offer teeth whitening, but this is illegal if there’s no dental professional present.

Q: Is it safe to use DIY home kits?
A: You shouldn’t whiten your teeth at home with a product you’ve purchased over the internet or the like; you have no idea how much active chemical is in it – too much and it could be dangerous.

Q: what does getting my teeth whitened at a dentist involve?
A: It involves a number of visits to your dentist. They’ll take an impression of your teeth to make a mouthguard and will instruct you how to use it with a whitening gel. Using your mouthguard at home, you regularly apply the gel over a period of time agreed on with your dentist.

Q: Are there risks to tooth whitening?
A: If you have sensitive gums the whitening agent can burn them. Your dentist should assess your suitability for whitening before starting the process.

Q: How long will your teeth stay whiter?
A: Tooth whitening can last anything from a few months up to about three years, depending on how you look after your teeth. Smoking, drinking red wine, tea and coffee all stain the teeth.

Q: What questions should you ask before agreeing to tooth whitening?
A: If in doubt about the legality of the provider, ask for the Dental Council Registration Number.
Ask for the product used and its concentration.

If a light is being used ask why – it’s not effective.

Super friendly and welcoming staff. Have been going here almost 2 years and always leave with a smile on my face!! Grainne is extremely professional and very friendly. I also found the location ideal as I work closely and so I am able to call in after work, the late evening opening hours at Cork Dental Care are brilliant!

From the fabulous welcome at the front desk, to the 5-star care and attention from Debbie the hygienist, I couldn’t compliment this practice enough. Looking forward to my return visit. Would highly recommend to anyone. Thanks again guys. Keep up the great work.
